Applique: stitching material on material.
This is the traditional method of making flags. Almost any design can be reproduced with this method. Many years ago applique and embroidery were the only methods available to make flags. Today, with the advancements in printing technology we have many other choices that are more flexible and less expensive. This method is generally used for very simple designs and when specific color matches are not important.

Since applique designs are hand-stitched and hand-trimmed, it is labor-intensive making complicated designs very expensive.
